Deva

Deva
The word Deva or Daeva has different values in the various religions of the East. In the Vedas it means any of the gods; in the Zend-Avesta it means an evil spirit, while in Buddhism it may mean hero or goblin. The reason for this is that the original value of the word was preserved in the Vedas, but by the time it had become incorporated in the Zend-Avesta it had become degraded by the process of Dualism. The Zoroastrians declared: ‘I cease to be a worshipper of the Devas’; in Buddhism the religion had grown so far away from the ancient gods that they were no longer of import either for good or for evil.
